What to expect:
I recognize that first appointments with a new therapist can sometimes be uncomfortable or nerve-wracking, until some comfort level is established. My style in therapy is informal, without a lot of paperwork and in-depth forms about your past. I do have a few forms I will invite you to look over prior to arriving, which will be emailed to you: regarding confidentiality and the limits of that, info about my cancellation and payment policy, info on what to do if you have a mental health crisis, and an invitation to note some of your history. This way, at our first session, we can begin right away with the topics that brought you here.
Mutual respect in the therapy session is of vital importance to working together towards the changes you want to experience. One way we can both show this respect is by being mindful of the session length. Appointments usually last 50-55 minutes. Sometimes there isn't an easy ending to a conversation, or we may find we have just begun to dig in to an important topic when the session is over. I may need to bring an end to the conversation even if it feels like we are in the middle of something. If this happens, I will make a note of where we left off so that we can begin there again the next time if that still feels relevant the next time we meet. I will do my best to start our appointments on time and end on time; this is one way I will show you respect as a client.
